Artist's Statement
I've always loved the art of photography. Drawn to the possibilities of catching a moment in time that was both resonant and evocative of something deeper. Also, I was never much of a painter or a musician, so there you have it! Fortunately, I've always had this knack for seeing the beauty in things. That means that sometimes I could create something that others would enjoy too. What I learned over the years though, what really made a photograph "work", more than f-stops and shutter speeds, and how it was framed, was the need for the photographer to really show up and connect to that very particular moment; open and ready. Really seeing! In the images I create, I look to discover things. Yes, the beauty of the form, but also what may not have been noticed in the actual moment itself. Things we may have overlooked. Photography has encouraged me to look more slowly and closely. What is a photograph, if not an extremely slowed down moment in time? I work with my clients to create vibrant, expressive, and real images of our subject – be it a person, a place or a thing. I definitely want to work in an authentic, competent, and open way to create a great image. I also want to say that I realize there are some of us who are not at ease in front of a camera. (This is more prevalent than you might realize.) And yet, here we are, needing an image of ourselves! For that new website we're creating or updating, or for a million other reasons. So it is. I assure you that we can make it easy, interesting, and even enjoyable while we create something unique that we can feel good about. I care about what I'm doing, and I respect the process and the clients I work with. I like the preparation it takes to do a good shoot, the shoot itself and all the post-production work involved. I think the whole thing can be a lot of fun!
"The virtue of the camera is not the power it has to transform the photographer into an artist, but the impulse it gives him to keep on looking." —Brooks Atkinson |
